Looking for a way to tame those kids around Christmas? This 25 Days of Christmas Books idea just may be the thing to get your kids to stop asking where all the presents are.
Years ago I was mindlessly scrolling through social media and come across a rather brilliant idea. A mom would wrap up 25 Christmas books and put them under the tree then every night the kids could pick one gift and open it for 25 days! Brilliant!
So as Jane got older I thought of that post and thought I should really do that for her.
- It will help tame some of her excitement
- We don’t deal with the I don’t know what book I should pick tonight
- Mom can you read just 5 more
- We don’t have to read the same book over and over and over again
- You know all the other struggles that come with Christmas storytime
That was when I started collecting Holiday Books. Here are 25 of our favorites.
The Collection Books- Click on books for details
These books are what I prefer the kids to start with because they have multiple stories. So on the days, they don’t unwind with just one story then we have more to snuggle up to.
Plus I am all about positive reinforcement. So of course if they are naughty they don’t get to open a present, but there will always be a story to cuddle up to.
The Activity Books – Click on books for details
These books are the ones they hunt for! I like to look for activity books that still require reading. Some of them are reused year after year (puzzle books, or pic-a-boo books). Other I get from the $1-3 dollar bin at Target or Walmart (color books and sticker books)
I find that having 2 for each kid and wrapping them together, in two packs, encourages them to help each other out, and they are so excited and distracted about their “new” activities they hardly fight!!
Religious Books – Click on books for details
If you are not about the religious side of the Holidays feel free to skip over these books. I am a firm believer in I am neither someone’s maker or their judge, just please do me the same respect and don’t leave a nasty comment.
I am a religious person and I do believe that the reason we celebrate Christmas is to spread the story of how Jesus Christ was born. What better way to do that then to share some fun picture books!
Classics – Click on books for details
What is Christmas without some classic Christmas stories?
I honestly love these stories and when I read them I have a sense of nostalgia. Honestly, as an adult, there is nothing like being able to zone out and forget about the stress of the holidays and go to a place where you feel like a kid again consumed by the joy and excitement of the season!
Fun of the Season Books – Click on books for details
Every year I try to go out and find a new Christmas story. A fun book that we can cuddle up to with our hot cocoa and laugh.
These books have done this for us year after year. Who knows what I will find next?
There are many options when it comes to how you would like them to open the books.
If you have a certain order you want them to open them. You can wrap them and number them. You can even do letters
The past few years we have just been doing it as a grab one and that is what you get.
You can even be the trickster mom and put the books in boxes so the kids have no idea what book they are grabbing. Trust me after the first few years they will try to guess every book every time.
The only problem I have with sharing this tradition with you is I can’t seem to find the post that inspired this!! It vanished, so now I can’t give credit where it is due. But!! Know this is not an MCB original idea it was inspired by a brilliant mom.
These 25 books of Christmas are a way for the whole family to pause. Take a step back from the madness, and enjoy just 30 minutes a day with each other. Allow yourself to feel the joy of the season not just Christmas morning, but a small dose for 25 days.
If you like this post and are thinking about doing a thing for your kiddos would love to see! Please tag #MCB25BooksofChristmas.
