Do you have a drink that makes you think of home and family? Or just a nostalgic drink? That’s what old fashioned cocktail is for me. It’s the drink my grandfather always used to drink, and the drink my grandmother makes for me when I come to visit.
It is a classic drink that originated in 1881 at a gentlemen’s club in Kentucky. Since then there have been hundreds of variations of the recipe. Some use rum, others use bourbon, but many use whiskeys. Some call for sugar other for sweet vermouth. Some call for club soda other for a lemon-lime carbonated beverage.
But!! By far the best way is the way my grandmother makes her old-fashioned cocktail a combination of whiskey, bitters, sweet vermouth, cherry juice, and 7-up then garnished with an orange wheel and cherries.
So as the weather gets colder and I find myself missing my loved ones I whip up a drink and remember the good old times back in Michigan and Colorado.
Well, this year I decided to change it up. What can I say? I felt a little festive. Instead of using straight whiskey, I opted for apple whiskey. Then garnished with a cinnamon-coated apple wheel.
The best part about this Autumn Old Fashioned Cocktail is I still get that sense of nostalgia with a simple taste of the season! For more festive drinks check out the Autumn Cocktail List!
All you really need to make this drink is a good 8 ball glass and a stir stick (a spoon does just as good)
