I read a sign the other day that saidm “Failure is an option.” This got me thinking is it really an option? Is failure something that you can control, or does it just happen?
There are two definitions of failure:
- lack of success.
- the omission of expected or required action.
Just going off of these definitions I guess you could say, failure is an option. You can choose not to have success and you can choose not to omit you failed. Those are cleat options one has in life. However, I don’t agree with the whole option thing.
I think it is all about your perspective of the problem or situation. Everyone fails. Not one person on this planet has had a life without failure. It is what you do after you fail that defines you, that counts in this world.
I don’t think Thomas Edison when making the light bulb got it on his first attempt and probably not in his first 50. He failed. I don’t think the researchers looking for a cure for cancer feel accomplished every time one trial fails, because they failed.
The thing that sets these types of people apart is not the fact that they fail over and over again but they keep going. They find the flaws, they reinvent, they fix the problem over and over and over again. No matter how many times they fail.
Yes, I just called these brilliant minded individuals failures. They let failure be an option because without it there would be no success. To try something over and over again with the ultimate outcome being to fail but still hold onto hope that it will work and better the world is true bravery.
The New Definition of Failure
Could you imagine if we changed our perspective every time someone said we failed to a positive meaning instead of a negative how the world would change?
It is what we do with failure that will define us and our success. To me, the definition of failure should not be lack of success but should be an attempt of trying and not getting the results you expected.
After all, failure leads to success so maybe the other definition of failure should be the doorway to success.
Failure happens, it is part of life. Once we learn to appreciate and learn from our failures is when we can evolve into greatness.
