Happy August!! Can you believe how fast this year is going! You know what they say days go slow but years go fast. These days they go even faster with all the digital distractions we have on the daily. Which is why I am proposing a Digital Diet!
Before you say this girl is crazy, a digital diet, time to read something new, please hear me out!
So, it was a nice summer day here in the country where my cell phone rarely works and my internet is a hit and miss most days. I had some friends come for a visit.
One of these friends was ALWAYS on her phone. It was starting to get a bit annoying and frustrating. They came to visit to get away from the city and to enjoy some country so why be on your phone.
Well, I hid the phone, well I sat on her phone. She got so mad because I wouldn’t give it back. So she grabbed my arm and gave little old me a good yank and I flew down the stair of the porch and landed face first in the dirt.
Now, some people are probably saying wow… crazy! But really think about it! What would you do without your phone? How upset would you be if someone took it away? How many times this year allow have you lost your phone and panicked?
Yes, being thrown downstairs was a bit extreme, but it was an accident. She just wanted me to get off her phone which I did take and sit on. Therefore, neither of us are innocent.
Now, with that being said. We as a society need a break from the digital. Hence a Digital Diet. We need to remember what a real conversation is. We need to stop relying on inanimate objects for entertainment, for communication, for connections, because really are those true.
Playing games on your phone against strangers or going to a play with a friend. Which one is true entertainment?
Texting a friend throughout the day when you have pockets of time, or meeting a friend for coffee and chatting without distractions. Which one is true communication?
DM from strangers on social media or a meeting of like-minded individuals talking about common interests. Which one is a true connection?
Yes, there are arguments that both in every scenario are true connections but which one will you get the most out of.
That is why I propose a digital diet. No not one that says give up your phone for an entire day, week, or month, because that would be insane. I am a blogger for crying out loud, my job is digital (Hahaha).
What I do propose is limiting your time. Take 1-3 hours a day unplugged, when you are not working or sleeping. Make plans with a friend and turn your phone on silent, leave it in the car, purse, or, even at home remind yourself what a try connection is. Find a group, book club, riding club, knitting club, whatever you’re in to find one and get to know people who like the same things as you.
Invite a friend to this challenge! #MCBdigitaldiet
Remember this is not about getting rid of digital distractions but reminding ourselves we can have a life without them.
